Spartans Masters 2

Godfathers 0

Goals: Stevie G, Willy

After our first league win we went into this game with our tails up and lots of hope that we could build on this with another follow up win and so it was. The Godfathers beat us last time 3-1 and we knew it was always going to be a tough game. We started off the game once again with only bare numbers as a few people were running late including the refs who didn’t start things until 10 minutes.

Kick-off and fairly even first 15 minutes with not much separating both teams. We seem to be getting more possession  as time went on but really failed to threaten a pretty shaky keeper. Andy having the best of chances but hit it over the bar. We started to get more on top creating more chances with Randy missing narrowly a well as Steve G shot goal bound getting blocked by their defender somehow.  Introduction of Raul on the right caused them some problems and their keeper pulled off a great save to deny him a goal. As the half drew to a close we fell asleep at the back and let them back into it. One free kick they had their guy totally unmarked missed a free header only few yards from the line……lucky break.

Half time 0-0 and the first 10-15 minutes of second half would be crucial. I thought we really upped our game in second half and it was pleasure to see the team playing so well. Randy coming through midfield had a great chance to put us ahead but skewed it wide with goal at his mercy. However some terrific play from Raul on the left setup Stevie G who slotted home our first goal with ease.

They did push hard but I thought our defence was second to none and mistake free and we really never looked like conceding.  With about 10 minutes to go Willy does a fantastic run on the left where he beats 2 players with shear speed before brilliantly putting the ball in the back of the net to settle the game for us. We easily see off the rest of the game with a handful of chances from several players to extend our win but none were taken.

All in all everyone played well, Adrian was super solid in goals when asked. Stevie G once again commanded the centre of park couldn’t get a better player in this league in that position and top goal to boot to put us in the lead. Raul looked the goods especially given he is just 2 weeks back from a long term injury, once he came on and had several shots which were saved by their keeper. While I thought Willie especially in the second half looked very dangerous out wide and capped it off with a terrific solo goal. Sam, Paul and Tony once again looked solid as wing backs with both central defenders Jay and Nathan playing terrific games. I thought in particular Nathan had a cracking game wining everything in defence and was my MOM of the night.
