Spartans Masters 1 v DBFC  Vets 1

A gritty performance from us against decent opposition resulted in another draw with a tough DB side. Our third draw in a row in as many matches against the same team there is no doubt they will be one of the front runners in the league.

As for Spartans a few late pull outs (fines master activated) and our team had an unusual shape about it with 5 minutes before kick-off. Grimshaw a last minute replacement for Stefan who was sorely missed in midfield slotted in defense with Rick.

The game was a tight affair with few or little chances in stark contrast to last week’s mauling. It was no surprise to see us go scoreless at the break. Both teams threatened at times but chances were minimal and at best just half chances.

The second half they got the crucial first goal a nice low strike from 30 yards out hitting the post and they reacted quicker to take advantage of the rebound. We responded well though and a good run from El Tel on the left saw their keeper fumble the cross and Mitchell was there to knee it in for the equalizer.

Still a few chances late in the game but in the end 1-1 draw was probably what both teams deserved.

Individually there wasn’t much to crow about other than our defence which was outstanding I thought with Leo being solid in goals. We struggled to get grips in midfield with them closing us down and Stevie G being isolated at times unable to weave his magic but really it was that kind of game. Although dangerous up front we didn’t threaten their goal near enough as we took too many touches at crucial times in their third instead of being more direct. The most pleasing aspect was however the work rate especially off the ball everyone did their bit and tracked back and chased down their advances to get a result.

It showed a lot of character to come back from being 1-0 down and we will need a lot more of that as the season unfolds.

MOM: Grimshaw.
