Wanderers 4 – Sparts 2

Goals: Jan, Henry

In hottest conditions we played so far in pre season we were up against Yau Yee division one champions Wanderers, arguably the best amateur team in HK. We had a number of pull outs on the day which was quite disappointing considering the team we were playing against and the select nature of the squad. In the end we played with 14 players against a squad of 20, given we had selected players ahead of others a few FINES will be raised in the future about late on the day withdrawals.

Our squad was diminish even further with a few players hung over and lasting less than 10 minutes on the pitch.  With 30 minute thirds this was going to be a true Spartans character if we weren’t going to smashed 11-0 like we were last year against the same team.

Kick-off and Wanderers started off brightly a very good technical team they also have strength to combine with their running play. And it wasn’t long before their speedy striker Peter Robinson found the net. However a great reply by Janny leaping from a corner got us straight back into it leveling the scores. Wanderers hit back with a timely goal before Steve G and Scouse started to boss midfield in the last 10 minutes and we came very close to leveling before the half drew with a Steve G shot been blocked.

With several changes in the next third we lost our way a bit. A few players struggling in the heat and coming off as quickly as they came on, we looked a shadow of the team in the first third. Goals came at the beginning and end of the half for Wanderers and at 4-1 and depleted side the final third had all the signs of a massacre.

The final third however started brightly with some nice interplay by Sparts from the kickoff saw Medhi win a corner before a pin point Jim Rose corner saw myself totally unmarked and a simple header into back of the net to give us our second. We worked tirelessly in the final third and a few nice saves by Thomas Ma and some excellent defensive work kept our opponents at bay.  Medhi and Jens having chances to narrow the gap but we couldn’t find that other goal.

For those that played hats off to you for a great effort given the oppressive conditions, the quality of our opponents  and the numbers we had. With a  host of quality players for the Spartans out for this game the season looks very bright indeed.
