Football’s a funny game. This time last year we were on top of the world celebrating Second Division title glory and looking forward to the prospect of mixing it with the big boys in Division One.

Well 12 months on and it’s a more depressing reflection. With just one point required in two games, we were unable to find that little bit extra to secure Division One status and for another season are relegated by goal difference.

We played a great first half Sunday and were extremely unlucky to see three shots come off the woodwork in a half we dominated. We let ourselves down in the second half and conceded two quick fire sloppy goals. Rick Man did his utmost to get us back in the game with two excellent headers. However, Swiss did their best to make sure we got relegated and scored a 3rd to kill off any hopes. I would like to thank the guys that came in on the day (Simon, Stevie and Adam) and did a great job.

For me personally, this has been a season where I thought we’d be able to make a top half finish and with the players we’ve had in the squad this year, this was certainly a chance to show the league that Spartans FC can compete at the highest level. The key issue this year has been consistency. We have never been able to field the same team from one week to the next, whether it be injuries or vacation or simply a matter of not being bothered to turn on the day. In contrast, last year when we were winning games the motivation and commitment was there and consequently a Division title was claimed.

The Spartans FC philosophy has always been a club with excellent social qualities. This philosophy I’m happy to say continues. However, maybe with more ambition we can be a bigger force and look at one day competing for Division One glory.

I have been giving some thought to the future of the Sunday team and I think it’s time a new Manager took over and move this team in a direction of championship winners as opposed to yo-yoing between Divisions. I will support in anyway, whether it be in a playing capacity or other role.

Cheers,
Flabbo.
