Match report vs Peak Warriors
It might have been the first game in a new division, but it was business as usual on Thursday night as Sohos put in a performance full of guts, character and never-say-die spirit to record an exhilarating 10-9 win against Peak Warriors. Welcoming newbies Ben and Leon into the side, we started intently, and after the opening exchanges we went deservedly 1-0 up and looked good to take the game to them from there. But Peak Warriors came back strongly and, thanks to a combination of bad luck and defensive misadventure, we quickly found ourselves 3-1 down. A bit like a team of footballing Ron Jeremys, coming from behind has become our speciality, and we hit back with three goals in the space of little over a minute to regain the ascendancy, Damo in particular causing them all sorts of problems. But slack marking allowed Peak to score three times without reply, all from virtually the same spot. Half-time score: 4-6.
Resolving to tighten up our marking and use our larger squad size (8 to Peak’s 6) to up the pace and tire out the opposition, we came out blazing and pulled a goal back from a Pablo thunderbolt, but still we couldn’t maintain the momentum and Peak kept their noses ahead as we traded goals for the next 20 mins. With Nathan driving us forward from the keeper/sweeper role, and the rest of the team digging deep and fighting for every yard we drew level at 9-9 with five minutes to go, then finally got in front in the final three with a well-taken goal by Damo turning in a loose ball, and held on to register a very satisfying win. Room for improvement in our defensive shape and marking certainly, but overall a great performance to snatch a win from a game we could easily have lost, and one that bodes well for the season ahead.
