Goal: Jan Van Buttle

On a balmy Saturday Night the Spartans took on USRC side packed with first division players but lying low in the league table. Missing our commander and chief Steve G this was always going to be a tough game.

We turned up to play against a team which was well drilled and organized and clearly not belonging on the right end of the table. With only minutes from the Kickoff USRC number one striker Callhanger found a break and somehow heading towards goals was miraculously tackled by Bertrand. It was top shelf tackle of the highest magnitude.

From this point on we started to take control with Charlie immediately making his presence felt in midfield he bossed the place like it was his. Jan and Nathan was our unlikely strike force however both of them gel so well it seemed they had been playing together for years.

The inter passing play combinations were working well with Mikey and Charlie pushing the balls through from midfield. One of these forays saw Jan setup Nathan with only the keeper to beat hit it wide. Chance missed there wouldn’t be many against this team. Mav was having excellent game out wide and was causing all sorts of problems. Tony’s injury problems continued which was a shame and had to come off early. Richard getting a taxi ride from the Valley finally made it and slotted in to make an immediate impact.

However the defence looked outstanding Bertrand and Tarik formed an impregnable wall and Thomas on the left was amazing as he tackled and created attacks from the backline. Andy B was solid as ever and was looking a man possessed, no one was getting through him.

Nil nil at half time and we were playing very well but so was the opposition. Kick off second half and strike from their Nigerian import produced the save of the season from Thomas cat like reflexes. It was brilliant save and a crucial one in the context of the game. We continued to press and when Richard found some free space on the left he slotted a perfect ball to Jan who took two touches of composure to hammer home our winner. It had the gaffer jumping for joy it was an excellent goal.

With 15 minutes to go we still had a game to win and our defence played their part along with our midfield. An amazing tackle by Oggy and Charlie stopped Andy Mitchell from scoring and then a last minute header from their other striker hit the crossbar. However it was too late the whistle went and the victory was ours. It was an excellent win which propelled us equal first in the league.

Everyone played so well it would be hard to single out any player in a great team performance. However Thomas D and Tarik along with Bertrand were outstanding in defence but Jan without a doubt chasing his socks off up front was the man of the match with a crucial goal and playing superbly.

Great win guys lets keep the momentum going this week and get another good squad out against BOCs. The title is up for grabs we just need the desire to go all the way. We have excellent squad one I truly believe we can do it. If people make themselves available and committed in the weeks to come no doubt we will stay at the top.
